Sparks Health System and Summit Medical Center now accept Medicare patients who wish to be a part of its Surgical Weight-Loss Program.
Patients under the age of 70, on a case-by-case basis, could qualify for the Gastric Sleeve weight-loss procedure at either location. Medicare covers some bariatric surgical procedures when patients meet certain conditions related to morbid obesity.
In Fort Smith, Gastric Sleeve surgery is available by Dr. Michael Gooden, a fellowship-trained minimally invasive and bariatric surgeon practicing with Surgical Associates of Fort Smith. The doctors have been performing bariatric surgery since November 2011.
Summit began offering Gastric Sleeve, as well as Gastric Banding, performed by Board Certified General Surgeons Joe S. Padilla, Jr., M.D., and Travis Goodnight, M.D., in November 2010.
Unlike the band, there is not a foreign body inserted when a patient undergoes a Gastric Sleeve. The procedure also provides all the advantages of a minimally invasive surgery: fewer wound and lung problems, less pain and faster recovery.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 2010 survey, 30.5% of Arkansans fall into the obese category of 30 or more pounds overweight. The medical cost associated with obesity also tops more than $660 million dollars in the state.
