Sparks
Health System’s Patient Safety Program
The Institute of Medicine
(IOM)
noted in 2000 that more between 44,000 and 98,000 Americans die each year from
medical errors. They also list state that medical errors kill more people per
year than breast cancer, AIDS, or motor vehicle accidents.
Aware that medical errors can and do occasionally happen,
Sparks Health System has placed Patient Safety as one of its top priorities.
Key to consistent and safe care is the promotion of a Culture of Patient
Safety. Reducing risk through proactive
assessment and overall associate commitment are key features of this program. Associates
are encouraged to come forward when they or others perceive makes have
been made, thus allowing us the opportunity to examine the processes involved
in the care deliver and prevent any potential future mistakes.
Sparks’ associates are committed to providing the safest patient
centered, error free care environment that gives timely and effective care to
our patients and families. Sparks
also encourages our patients to play active roles in their own care.
Sparks has a Patient Safety Committee which prioritizes patient
safety projects and implements evidence based practices throughout our hospital
and clinics. When implementing new or revised processes, the committee ensures
staff is well educated and trained on the process and that the processes are
measured to ensure a high compliance.
