What is osteoporosis?
Most people attain their level of peak bone mass between ages 30 and 35. Osteoporosis is a loss of bone mass that can occur in women after menopause as bone density rapidly decreases. Loss of bone mass can lead to critically low levels of bone density and thus an increased risk of bone fractures. Osteoporosis is now preventable and treatable. Your physician can order a Dexascan done Desitometry test.
What are the risk factors for developing osteoporosis?
Aging, menopause and other risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use, being below normal body weight, estrogen deficiencies, low intake of calcium and inadequate physical activity can contribute to increased bone loss.
What are the signs or symptoms of osteoporosis?
In general, osteoporosis is silent and progressive, and is best treated when diagnosed early. Early signs may include shortened stature, back pain or fractures of the vertebrae, hip or forearms. Fractures may occur without major trauma or pain and may be detected only when a routine X-ray is performed.
Should I be tested for osteoporosis?
If you are menopausal, 50 years or older, have a family history of osteoporosis or receive long-term steroid treatment, you should be tested for bone loss at The Women's Center Osteoporosis Clinic by having a Dexascan. The clinic provides bone density studies of the lower spine, hip and/or forearm and a risk questionnaire reviewed by a Certified Desitometry Technologist. The Women's Center also offers an Achilles scan, which is a screening tool on patients without risk factors. This is a free service of the Women's Center and can be done without a doctor's order.
Are bone density studies painful?
A Dexascan machine measures bone density in both hips and lumbar spine. It is noninvasive and causes no pain. You will need to wear a two-piece outfit with no metal zippers. You will not have to undress, and the test takes only minutes as you are scanned. Do not take a calcium supplement for 24 hours before the exam. The test, including a short history, takes about 20 minutes.
When will I receive my bone density results?
The technologist performing your test will give you an educational booklet about osteoporosis before you leave. A detailed report will be sent to your doctor within a few days. You will also have your results mailed to your home from The Women's Center within a few days.
What can I do to prevent osteoporosis?
Some women are more prone than others to developing bone loss with aging. Quitting smoking, limiting alcohol use and maintaining a healthy diet before menopause will help. Proper hormonal therapy after menopause, calcium supplements and regular weight-bearing exercise are also ways of helping your bones remain strong and healthy.
