Kids are special at Sparks!
Each child brings us special gifts: the recollection of our past, a message of hope for the future and, above all, the lesson of experiencing the joy of the present.
The Pediatric Unit on 3 Central at Sparks Health System is the only dedicated unit for children in the area. The staff is trained to stay current on the skills most used for children, to involve children in their own care and to take special steps to minimize anxiety and pain.
Pediatric Unit
The Pediatric Unit has several unique features:
- Rooms are designed for children.
- Cots are available for sleepover parents.
- A wagon (when appropriate) makes transport more fun.
- Playrooms offer a wealth of games, toys and videos.
- There is also a portable entertainment center that can be rolled to patient rooms for bedridden patients.
- Special visitors, treats and activities are arranged throughout the year.
- Children who have birthdays while in the hospital celebrate with a personal cake.
Awareness of the special needs of children prevails throughout the Medical Center. Support staff such as respiratory therapists and laboratory personnel are trained to explain procedures to children and help alleviate their fears.
